A scarce American Model 1894 .32-40 calibre Winchester Lever action rifle. 26 inch octagonal barrel with full length magazine.
This lever action repeating rifle became one of the most famous and popular hunting rifles.
It was designed by John Browning in 1894 and originally chambered to fire two different metallic black powder cartridges, the .32-40 Winchester and .38-55 Winchester. It was the first rifle to chamber the smokeless powder round. The 26 inch barrel engraved on top Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven Conn. U.S.A. PAT AUG 21 1894. Clear markings of the calibre in front of the receiver 32-40 and MODEL 1894 WINCHESTER on the tang. Buck-horn rear sight and blade front sight. Case hardened hammer, lever and crescent shaped butt-plate. Full length tube magazine. The serial number informs us this rifle was manufactured in 1901. Good crisp working action.
Overall length 44 inches. The Model 1894 later became known as the Model 94 or simply the 94. The American public could not get enough of the 94, making it the first sporting rifle in history to sell more than a million rifles. President Calvin Coolidge received the one-millionth rifle in 1927 and President Eisenhower got the two millionth 94 in 1961. The Model 94 will always be an icon of American firearms history.
